In the world of automotive excellence, few names resonate like BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke). The blue and white checkered pattern in the BMW logo is inspired by the Bavarian flag, representing the company's roots in the German state of Bavaria. The circular shape of the logo comes from BMW’s early history in aviation, The origin of the round shape is from the Rapp Motorenwerke logo (German aircraft engine manufacturer founded in 1913). Founded in 1916, It began as a manufacturer of aircraft engines during World War I, and the company’s iconic blue-and-white logo symbolizes a spinning propeller, paying tribute to its aviation roots (the Propeller interpretation is from a marketing idea from 1929, not the original intent). The journey from propellers to precision-engineered automobiles is a story of relentless ambition, visionary leadership, and innovation that has inspired millions.

BMW R32

The company transitioned into motorcycle production in 1923 with the R32, and by 1928, BMW was producing automobiles after acquiring the Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach. Their first car, the BMW 3/15, laid the groundwork for a brand identity that would focus on performance, luxury, and engineering brilliance.

The road wasn’t always smooth. After WWII, BMW's factories were destroyed or repurposed. The company even made pots and pans to survive. But true greatness emerges in adversity. Under the leadership of Hanns Grewenig and later Herbert Quandt, BMW made a monumental comeback. Quandt’s financial investment and strategic restructuring in the late 1950s saved the company from being sold to Mercedes-Benz and helped BMW chart its own destiny.

Herbert Werner Quandt, a German industrialist and member of the Nazi Party credited with having saved BMW when it was at the point of bankruptcy

Then came the revolutionary BMW 1500 in 1962, ushering in the “Neue Klasse” era, setting a new benchmark for sports sedans. In the decades that followed, BMW crafted some of the most iconic models in automotive history: the 3 Series (1975), 5 Series, 7 Series, and the high-performance M division in 1978, with the legendary M1 supercar leading the charge.

From 1990 onward, BMW began its global expansion in earnest, opening its first U.S. plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina in 1994, which later became the global hub for its X-series SUVs. In 1994 the company Land Rover. By 2000 they sold it to Ford for a loss because it was not a viable investment for the BMW brand. In 1998, BMW acquired the Rolls-Royce brand, reinforcing its luxury status. The early 2000s saw the controversial yet influential designs of Chris Bangle, reshaping BMW’s visual identity. In 2004, the company launched BMW EfficientDynamics, a major push toward cleaner, more efficient performance. By 2013, BMW made its boldest move into electric mobility with the launch of the i3 and plug-in hybrid i8, pioneering premium EVs before most of its competitors. By 2020, BMW had firmly established itself as a leader in performance, innovation, and early EV adoption, setting the stage for its current transformation into a digital and electric-first brand.
