This week I found myself watching a show on Netflix that followed two characters as they drove from a remote region in western Spain into the city of Porto in northern Portugal, on a mission to purchase two boats for their business and meet with lawyers. What caught my attention wasn’t the boats, the business deals, or even the storyline, it was the car they were driving. A Ferrari 360 Modena, painted in an unmistakable red, carving through the Iberian landscape (a mountainous region that's most associated with the countries of Spain and Portugal.) That single image sparked something in me. Inspiration, well it rarely arrives with formality. It often appears in passing moments, like a show, a conversation, a sunset, or the glimpse of a supercar shooting across a foreign road. This car reminded me that ideas about what cars to pursue, write about and what to dream of often emerge from random and unexpected places.

Ferrari 360 Modena

When it debuted in 1999, it represented a bold break from Ferrari tradition: an all-aluminum space-frame chassis, new aerodynamic philosophy, and a design from Pininfarina (Sergio Pininfarina an Italian automobile designer) that radiated speed. Named “Modena” to honor the birthplace of Enzo Ferrari himself, the car symbolized a bridge between legacy and modernity. It arrived as the successor to the F355 and it completely evolved the lineage and redefined what a V8 Ferrari could be. Under its flowing bodywork lived a 3.6-liter V8 producing roughly 395–400 horsepower. This car has an engine that screamed to 8,500 rpm and delivered a driving experience that felt alive in your hands. With a 0–60 mph time of around 4.0 to 4.4 seconds, a top speed nearing 183mph, and a curb weight of about 3,065 lbs.

When it first hit the market, the 360 Modena carried a starting price of about $138,000, a figure that placed it firmly in supercar territory. Today, remarkably, many clean examples can be found near the $60,000 range, making it one of the most accessible “modern classic” Ferraris for dreamers who want their first taste of Italian exotic ownership. And while the Modena coupe is iconic on its own, the 360 family grew into multiple variations: the open-top 360 Spider, which let drivers experience the V8 symphony with the sky above, and the track-bred 360 Challenge Stradale, a sharper, lighter, edgier evolution revered by enthusiasts. Ferrari produced about 8,800 Modena coupes, 7,565 Spiders, and 1,288 Challenge Stradale models. This strategy was meant to create enough to have a global following, yet few enough to keep demand alive decades later.

The Ferrari 360 Modena has appeared widely in pop culture, making notable cameos in films such as Gone in 60 Seconds, Redline, and Taxi 3, where it reinforced its image as a modern exotic. It showed up on TV in shows like Top Gear, The O.C. and Entourage, often used to represent wealth and high-status living. Gamers know it well from major franchises like Need for Speed, Forza, Project Gotham Racing, and Gran Turismo, where it became one of the most recognizable early-2000s supercars. The 360 also appeared frequently in hip-hop and R&B music videos, particularly those by artists like Nelly, Ja Rule, and Akon, symbolizing success and luxury. Altogether, these appearances helped the 360 Modena become an icon of early-2000s pop culture and a symbol of ambition.

Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale

Perhaps that is the greatest lesson the 360 Modena offers. Ferrari wasn’t content to repeat past successes; they chose to innovate, to evolve, to take risks that pushed the brand forward. Now, lots of the modern-day Ferrari models draw their heritage to this car. If you want to create something extraordinary in your own life, follow the same path: honor where you came from, but never let it limit where you can go. For me personally, the thought of being on vacation in western Europe driving this car around sounds incredibly fun! Plus, where else can you get this look, this sound, this much culture for this price? (I don’t have the scene, but the show is Gangs Of Galicia episode 3)
