The Audi R8, debuted in September 2006, evolved from the Le Mans–dominated racing prototype bearing the same name honoring the high-performance “R8” racecar heritage while offering road-legal thrill. The name “R8” carries literal and symbolic weight: “R” for racing pedigree, “8” marking Audi’s internal model generation and aligning with V8 engine roots. Built with an aluminum “space frame” and hand-assembled parts, early production numbered just eight to fifteen cars daily at Neckarsulm, embodying craftsmanship over quantity.

The car weighs approximately 3,600 to 3,900 pounds, depending on whether it's the RWD or AWD version. When the original Audi R8 debuted in 2006, it had a base price of around $110,000. In contrast, the 2023 Audi R8 started at approximately $160,000 for the base RWD coupe and went up to over $220,000 for the range-topping Performance Quattro Spyder. The used market value for a 2023 Audi R8 typically ranges between $140,000 and $200,000, depending on mileage, condition, and specific trim.

The R8’s mid‑engine layout and exotic styling quickly made it an icon in pop culture: featured in Iron Man (2008) as Tony Stark's hero car, in video games like Gran Turismo and Need for Speed, and even in Final Fantasy XV as the one-of-a-kind “Star of Lucis” R8 blurring lines between fantasy and reality.
